The 2024 edition of the Holy Cross International College (HCIC) Proprietors Cup has come to a thrilling end, with Favelas FC emerging as champions in the junior football category. The team clinched the coveted title by defeating Solteros FC 2-0 in a match filled with excitement and determination.

From the outset, Solteros FC put Favelas FC under immense pressure, showcasing their aggressive strategy. Just five minutes into the game, they nearly took the lead with a promising opportunity, but their efforts fell short as they squandered several chances to score. The intensity of the match continued, with both teams battling for control on the field, yet neither could find the back of the net in the first half.

After a goalless first half, the teams regrouped and returned to the pitch with renewed vigor and revised strategies. The second half proved to be decisive for Favelas FC. They capitalized on a crucial opportunity, securing their first goal and gaining momentum.

In an effort to equalize, Solteros FC pressed forward, but in doing so, they left themselves vulnerable. This resulted in Favelas FC scoring a second goal, effectively sealing the match and leaving Solteros FC unable to respond.

As the final whistle blew, the score remained 2-0 in favor of Favelas FC, marking a memorable victory for the team.

After the match, the captain of Favelas FC expressed her joy and pride in their accomplishment. “This victory means the world to us,” the captain stated. “Our hard work and teamwork have truly paid off. We look forward to defend our title next year.” This final also marked the first time these two teams faced each other in the Proprietors Cup, adding an element of rivalry to the match.

The 2024 HCIC Proprietors Cup officially kicked off on December 8 at the school campus, featuring a total of eight teams—four in handball and four in football. The tournament has become a cherished tradition at HCIC since its inception in 2014, fostering a spirit of competition and camaraderie among students.

This year’s tournament held special significance as it was dedicated to the memory of Peter Ngu Tayong, a beloved leadership coach at HCIC who recently passed away. Coach Tayong’s impact on the school community and the lives he touched will be remembered fondly by all. According to the school, his dedication to nurturing young leaders and instilling values of teamwork and perseverance served as an inspiration throughout the tournament.

As Favelas FC celebrates their championship victory, the excitement for next year’s tournament is already building. The Proprietors Cup continues to be a proof to the talent, dedication, and spirit of the students at Holy Cross International College.
